There are antioxidants …and then there are antioxidants. Quite literally, some are better at neutralizing free radicals than others.
To understand the difference among the thousands of them, we look at both quantity and quality. Consider the everyday comparison with paper currency. One person may have more bills in their wallet than another. However, the quantity of bills alone doesn't indicate buying power. Rather, their value makes the difference. (i.e. One ten dollar bill is worth more than three one dollar bills.) So in the end, the value of the wallet is determined by both the number and face value of the bills inside.
When evaluating antioxidants in a beverage, we need to look at both their quantity and quality. Compare a glass of pomegranate juice and a glass of red wine. As for quantity, our tests found that ounce for ounce, pomegranate juice has 17% more polyphenol antioxidants than red wine. (6.1 mM vs. 5.2mM). 1
Quality is measured by how effective the antioxidants are at neutralizing free radicals. Our free radical neutralization test (using the highly accurate DPPH method) shows that ounce for ounce, 100% pomegranate juice neutralizes 54% more free radicals than red wine (71% vs. 46% neutralization). 1
This not only suggests that pomegranate juice contains more polyphenol antioxidants than red wine, but also that each antioxidant molecule in pomegranate juice is more potent than the corresponding antioxidant molecule in red wine.
Which brings us back to POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice. With incredibly high levels of very potent, naturally occurring polyphenol antioxidants, POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice is truly the antioxidant superpower.
