Bioavailability of Ellagic Acid in Human Plasma after Consumption of Ellagitannins from Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) Juice

Seeram NP, Lee R, Heber D.
Clinica Chimica Acta 348 (2004) 63-68

This study examined the bioavailability of pomegranate actives by humans. Major active ingredients in pomegranate juice include tannins (ellagitannins) and ellagic acid. Ellagic acid was detected in the blood 1 hour following ingestion of pomegranate juice, and was eliminated after 4 hours. Ellagitannins were not detected in the blood. The authors suggest that ellagitannins may break down into ellagic acid in the intestine prior to absorption.
