Ancient Greeks believed that it was the goddess of love, Aphrodite, who planted the
first pomegranate on the isle of Cyprus. This is most likely the origin of the
pomegranateās reputation as a powerful aphrodisiac and "love potion."
In China, the pomegranate traditionally symbolized abundance, prosperity, and
numerous offspring. Pomegranate seeds were sugared and offered to wedding guests,
and when it came time to consummate the marriage, whole pomegranates were cast on the
floor around the marriage bed to ensure a joyful and fruitful union. A picture of a
ripe pomegranate also made a popular wedding present.
