Pomegranate Juice as a Major Source for Polyphenolic Flavonoids and It is Most Potent Antioxidant Against LDL Oxidation and Atherosclerosis

Aviram M.
Proceedings of the 11th Biennial Meeting of the Society for Free Radical Research International (2002) 523-528

This study compares pomegranate juice to red wine, blueberry juice, cranberry juice, orange juice, and a bottled green tea beverage in terms of its polyphenolic (antioxidant) properties. Pomegranate juice not only had more polyphenols than any of the other beverages, but the polyphenols in pomegranate juice were significantly more active. Pomegranate juice neutralized more free radicals and did a better job of protecting LDL ("bad") cholesterol from becoming oxidized, or being activated into its harmful form, which is deposited in the arteries.
